Excerpt

The instant Kam wakes, he knows he isn’t in the harem.

The bed is hard, the covers are thin and scratchy. Even the acoustics are different, echoing and dull.

When he opens his eyes, Kam doesn’t believe what he sees.

A large room with stone walls covered by tapestries done by someone who isn’t a fan of colour. A stone floor that Kam knows will be cold under his feet. The bed is fairly small, with a dark wooden frame. The windows are small and look out over a stark and forbidding garden that’s mostly tall, sturdy trees and thorn bushes.

Kam sits up and then groans at the ache in his head. His vision swims, but it is enough to tell him that he is somewhere he should not be.

He is in his bedroom in the castle in Ramia.

For a moment he’s so confused that he wonders if everything that’s happened could be a dream, if he never really went to Tarra at all. But no: when he looks down at himself, although he is wearing a cream shirt and brown trews, nothing like anything he’s worn this past month, he’s also wearing his golden collar, and when he pulls aside the collar of his shirt he sees the tattoo, a dragon nestled in clouds.

“My dragon,” Kam murmurs, thinking of Ryuu as he touches it. Wary of his aching head, Kam pushes to his feet and puts a hand to the wall for a moment until the room stops spinning. There’s a cup of water on the nightstand, and he drinks deep. It helps a little. He heads over to the door, but it’s locked, and there’s no key anywhere. He frowns down at it, hears voices on the other side.

“Hey!” He cries, hammering on the door. “Let me out of here!”

“Your brother is on his way, Prince Kam,” a voice says, muffled by the wood, but the door doesn’t open.

Excerpt

When the spots fade from his eyes, he turns to look at his statue in the bright sunlight–

His jaw drops open.

The statue – this statue, made of marble – hard, unmoving marble–

Well, it’s moving.

Rolling its shoulders as though it’s stiff, looking down at its hands, making them into fists and then stretching out his fingers and admiring them.

Oh my God, Steve thinks, but he doesn’t move, doesn’t do anything. What can he do? So he just stares as the statue looks down at itself – himself, Steve corrects, his gaze dropping down to the statue’s impressive manhood. And then the statue lifts his knee, pulling free from the raw marble base with a loud CRACK and stepping down to the floor. There’s a thud as he does, and then he looks over at Steve, who is still frozen and open-mouthed.

“Thank you, little mortal,” the statue says, in a voice that sounds amused, and there’s also a bit of an echo, as though he’s speaking in a canyon.

“I- You’re welcome,” Steve manages. He must be dreaming. He doesn’t remember going to sleep, but he must have, because this has to be a dream.

The statue walks over to him with thudding footsteps, and pauses before him. He’s about half a foot taller than Steve, much broader and stronger. Not that Steve’s a weakling, but he made this statue to be the perfect figure of a man.

I succeeded, Steve thinks, licking his lips as he looks over the statue’s impressive body, his beautiful face.

“Do you know who I am, little mortal?”

“I – I made you to be Apollo.”

Excerpt

The carriage crosses a bridge spanning the mighty Gyanna river, and Kam stares at the blue water sparkling in the sunlight, at the two halves of Tian on either side of the river. It’s as beautiful as any fairytale city.

“On this side of the river is the Council of Mages, the university, the school of architects – many centres of learning that make Tian – and Tarra – great.”

“Oh? And here I was thinking that it was the royal family that did that,” Kam says, turning away from the beautiful city to smile at him. “Especially the handsome Crown Prince.”

“Well, I do try,” Ryuu says, and kisses him again. This time it isn’t such a quick kiss. His hand slides inside of Kam’s robe, the skin on skin contact making Kam shiver. Ryuu’s fingers run over Kam’s skin, his tongue pressing into his mouth. In moments both of them are breathing heavily, and Kam is quickly getting hard.

Kam breaks off from the kiss so that he can shift to Ryuu’s lap, straddling him. The kiss resumes, and Ryuu tugs open Kam’s robe so that he can wrap a hand around Kam’s shaft. Kam groans, his fingers digging into Ryuu’s shoulders as he starts to stroke him.

“Is that good?” Ryuu asks, and Kam nods.

“So good.”

Ryuu smiles and moves his hand faster, until Kam is gasping and shivering under his touch.

Leaning in to kiss his neck, Ryuu asks,”Do you want more?”

“Gods, yes. Please!”

Ryuu pulls his hand away, and Kam groans. “Please, Ryuu, master, don’t stop.”

“Only for a little while,” Ryuu says and smiles. “I have a plan, but we have to be back in the harem for it. You can wait for me, can’t you?”

“Anything, master,” Kam breathes as he slides from Ryuu’s lap and back into his seat, but he has to grab handfuls of his robe to stop from touching himself.

The journey back to the palace seems to take three times as long as the journey there, and Kam’s patience is in shreds by the time they arrive.

As they walk through the white hallways of the palace towards the harem, Kam wonders what Ryuu’s plan is. Whatever it is, he’s sure he will like it. All of Ryuu’s ideas since he arrived have been marvellous.

Excerpt

Kam aches, even before he opens his eyes. It’s a good ache though, because it immediately brings to mind what happened the night before.

Sex with Ryuu. Incredible, mind-blowing sex, better than Kam ever thought it would be. Just the thought of it makes him bite his lip, makes his cock start to get hard. That, and the warmth of Ryuu’s body beside his. A hot, heavy arm draped is over his waist.
Finally Kam opens his eyes. Ryuu is still asleep, his dark hair fanned out on the pillow behind him. Kam smiles, and tentatively runs his fingers through it. His heart aches a little, but just like the ache in his body, it’s a good one. He gave himself to Ryuu last night. Gave him his virginity. Not because he felt he had to, but because he wanted to. And he wants to do it again. Maybe not just yet – he’s not sure he could take it – but soon.

For a while he just watches Ryuu sleep, still full of wonder at the thought that he’s no longer a virgin. It’s such an important thing in Ramia. Both men and women stay virgins until they marry. It’s sacred. Kam touches his collar, and smiles. Is the collar not as sacred as a golden ring of marriage? Is the bond between concubine and master not every bit as strong as that between husband and wife?

Kam bites his lip. Is it? Is what he feels for Ryuu the same as Unther feels for his wife? He was forced into this position – and yet Ryuu let him take things as slowly as he needed. Ryuu let him take his time in getting used to his new role as a concubine, was always kind and generous. Certainly Kam has enjoyed spending time with him: playing tafl, talking, sharing smiles – not to mention the more physical fun they’ve had.

Ryuu stirs, his dark eyes fluttering open. He sees Kam in front of him and goes very still, his eyes opening wide. He stares, and then lifts a hand to Kam’s cheek, his touch feather-light, as though he’s not quite sure he’s real. Kam smiles for him, and kisses the palm of his hand.

“Good morning, Ryuu.”

“Good morning,” Ryuu breathes, and then the arm around Kam’s waist tightens, pulling him close. Kam is expecting a kiss, but Ryuu instead buries his face in Kam’s hair, holding him tightly. Unexpected, but far from unpleasant. Kam relaxes in his arms, returns the hug. “I was sure it must have been a dream,” Ryuu murmurs, and Kam shakes his head.

“No dream – I can tell because of how much I ache.” He means it as a joke, but Ryuu pulls back to look at him worriedly.

“Did I hurt you?”

“No, no. It’s a pleasant ache.” Kam is the one who starts the kiss; soft, slow. The tension in Ryuu’s arms eases as they lose themselves in the kiss, in each other.

Excerpt

After they have finished their tea, Jian cuts straight to the heart of the matter. “We would consider an exchange of prisoners, and a peace treaty.”

Unther and Kam share a look. A peace treaty will no doubt be heavily in favour of the Tarrese, but to get their father back, it will be worth it.

“Let us hear your terms,” Unther says gruffly, and Jian smiles.

“The peace treaty will name you as a part of the Tarrese Empire,” Jian says, and Kam can feel Unther tense up by his side. “But you will remain as rulers, and govern yourself autonomously – unless I issue you commands.”

Kam raises his eyebrows, very slightly. That’s more of a concession than he was expecting. Although perhaps that’s more that Jian knows how fiercely loyal to their king their people are; a straight up takeover of Ramia would be more likely to result in many more years of war.

Jian gestures at his councillor, who brings forth a scroll. It goes into more detail about the peace treaty; Jian tells them to read it, and Unther spreads it out on the table before them. It’s simple enough: the Ramians will continue much as before in their daily lives. However, if they are called to fight for the Empire then they must, and the Empire gets taxes and trading rights. It will make the traders wince, Kam has no doubt, but it’s better than war.

When Unther has finished reading, he looks up at Jian. For a long moment he doesn’t say anything, just looks at him as though trying to figure out what his plan is, why he is giving Ramia such a generous treaty.

“And the exchange of prisoners? No doubt you want every prisoner of war handed over to you, every Tarrese who has ever graced our prisons.”

“The prisoners of war, yes; but those will be exchanged for your own prisoners. The king, however; we require a much more precious exchange for him.”

“Spit the words out,” Unther says, but Jian only smiles.

“All royal families whose countries belong to the Empire give their second child to the imperial family.”

The second child would be Kam, and he stares at Jian. “What do you mean, ‘give’?”

“These princes and princesses join the imperial harems,” Jian says, and his smile widens as he looks Kam up and down hungrily. “You would belong to my son, Ryuu, who will be emperor after me. My own tastes don’t much run to men, but Ryuu’s do – and you’re such a pretty thing, Prince Kam.”

“No,” Unther growls, while Kam is still processing his words. “I will not give my brother over for you to use as a whore.”

“As I said, I have little interest in him myself,” Jian says, though the lustful look in his eyes suggests he has at least some interest. “And he would be an honoured concubine, living in luxury and doted upon.”

Concubine, Kam thinks weakly, feeling like he’s been punched in the gut. They want me as a concubine? The prince’s concubine?

The very thought would be a horror to most of Ramia: same-sex attraction is seen as abhorrent, a great sin against the gods. That Kam secretly favours men to women – indeed, he has no interest in women at all – is a close kept secret. Not even his family knows: if they did, he’d have to go into exile or face execution. But to be forced into doing whatever Prince Ryuu wants fills him with horror and terror – and if there’s also a slight bit of curiosity and desire mingled in, he refuses to acknowledge it.

“But without freedom, and he’d have to spread his legs whenever your son demands it!” Unther says, and Jian nods.

“Yes; though I dare say he might grow to enjoy that.”

Excerpt

In the doorway, Kam freezes. Ryuu and Yenna are- They’re laying together, their bodies entwined, and Kam-

Kam looks away, emotions churning in his chest, weighing him down. He’s never felt like this before. The nearest equivalent he can think of is when Unther chose to play with his friends instead of Kam. But that’s ridiculous – he knows that he is not the only concubine, and since Kam has not been willing to share his body like that yet, why shouldn’t Ryuu take his pleasures elsewhere? The thought might be true, but it does nothing to stop the pain blossoming like an ugly flower.

Buri puts his hands to Kam’s shoulders and gently directs him towards the furthest part of the harem, near the bookcases. But since there are no walls in here, they are separated only by sheer blue curtains that do nothing to hide their moans and panting. They do little to hide them from vision, either, Kam notices when he glances over to see them kissing. The jealousy twists in his chest, barbed and ugly, and he forces himself to look away and glare at the floor instead.

“You know,” Buri says in a low voice, where he sits by Kam’s side. “If anyone should be jealous, surely it’s me?”

“I’m not jealous.” The words come instantly to his lips, even though he knows they’re not true. He is jealous, even if it is ridiculous.

Buri snorts. “Oh, I know that look, Kam. I’ve worn it myself a few times, though I like to think that I’ve mostly gotten over it by now. So – do you want to talk about it?”

There’s nothing to talk about, Kam almost says, but a moan from Ryuu stills his tongue. He squeezes his eyes shut just as his heart is squeezed in his chest. What’s the point in denying it any longer? Buri knows jealousy as much as Kam ever has, and he got over it – perhaps he can help it hurt less.

“It’s just, I like Ryuu. He’s a good man, and the way he treats me – like I’m special. Precious. It makes me feel important. Even though I am – was – a prince, I was the second prince and always aware of it. I’m small, and if not weak, then not particularly strong. My brother, Unther, is exactly the kind of prince my people wanted – tall and strong and fierce, a great warrior. I suppose it’s a good thing he’s the crown prince and not me. So he always got all of the attention and the praise. All I ever got was sighs and disappointed looks. But Ryuu- he’s different. He looks at me like I matter.” Kam’s sudden outburst comes to a stop when he realises what he’s saying. He’s never talked about this to anyone. Unther is a good man and a good prince, and moreover he’s a good brother. Kam feels like a bad person for being jealous of him.

“Of course he looks at you that way – you do matter. You matter a great deal. He was half in love with you before you even arrived,” Buri says, and Kam’s cheeks burn. In love? Surely not. “When the message came that you had volunteered to be his concubine, for the sake of peace, he had such a look of wonder. He called all his advisors to him, to find out everything he could about you. And he came here to wax lyrical about you – how brave you were, how noble. How excited he was to meet you. Now that you’re here, surely you’ve seen the way he looks at you.”

Kam blushes – he has, and he loves it. “But he-“ He glances over at Ryuu and Yenna’s entwined bodies again, and just as quickly away. “He can never be mine. Just mine. Even if I was alone in his harem, he would have to marry a woman to bear him an heir. So there’s no point in this – this jealousy.”

“There isn’t,” Buri says, shrugging. “Sometimes it happens though. You just have to make sure it doesn’t consume you.”

“How?”

“By remembering that he cares about you too. If I start to feel that way, I just remind myself that Yenna is in love with me – that I’m the one who has his heart.”

“I can’t say that about Ryuu, though.”

There’s no immediate answer, and Kam looks up at him to find Buri looking at him. “Can’t you?”

Excerpt

In the three weeks we’ve been running from the zombies together, he’s fed about eight times that I know of. Mostly on animals – deer, coyote – but the last time it was on a guy who agreed to it in exchange for bullets. Dimitri only took a pint or so, and the guy was fine after a lie down. That sustained him much more, he didn’t need to feed for a week afterwards, but the way he’s looking at me now…

I think I owe him.

“I need a drink,” I announce, and leave him there while I go searching for the booze. I grab a couple of glasses along with the bottle of whiskey, and head back up, my heart pounding. I sit back down next to Dimitri, offering him a glass which he takes, and watches me as I pour the amber liquid. I look at him as I sip my own drink. He’s good looking, of course. Stunning. I’ve never met a vampire who wasn’t. Short brown hair, silvery-grey eyes. Excellent bone structure, slightly crooked nose – he must have broken it before he was changed. And his lips – man, lips like that are meant for kissing. Among other things. The old me, before the zombies, would have been horrified at the thought of kissing a vampire. But the end of the world has a way of changing things. Of changing you.

Dimitri is watching me just as closely, and I’m slightly unnerved by the way his gaze keeps dropping to my jugular.

“Look,” I say, finishing off my glass, and then deciding I need another. As I pour, Dimitri cocks his head.

“Yes?”

I knock back the drink in one, and wince as it burns by throat. The way it makes my head spin slightly is pleasant, though. “Look, I guess – I owe you, right? You just saved my life. And maybe you were joking with the sustenance thing, but I can tell you’re hungry, and-” I undo a few buttons of my plaid shirt and pull open the collar. “Take what you need. Just – be careful.”

Dimitri stares at me, in disbelief this time. “Josef Van Helsing is offering to feed a vampire. Am I dreaming?”
